How did they manage to fit Danny Baker into the R2D2 costume in the Star Wars films?

I know things on telly are bigger than they look but no amount of greasing up could have made him fit into what is essentially a wheelie bin with pyrotechnics.
It was Danny Baker. He used to sell Daz with Shane Ritchie and Paul Ross.
I watched the DVD extras last night from a Korean import. Kenny Baker played a part of Darth Vader (the left leg) but he was voiced over by John Cooper Clarke.
