Best historical period costume movie - & why?

Hi all!

This is my favourite kind of movie - Roman Polanski's Tess, such a poignant story, carefully paced to fully evoke the very in depth nature of Thomas Hardy's novel, Titanic, the beauty and style of that era captured so faithfully, The Colour Purple, another involved story structure adapted from a novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock, for its elegance and faithful adaptation of a classic scenario, once again adapted from a novel. Tess, probably is the winner, because the film came closest to novel proportions, rather being stripped down to a thin form, suited to the cinema, as many books often become victims of this fault.
